BEHIND THE LID

June 3- June 28th
Tuesday through Sunday
8pm

"Rather like the great experiment that was avant-garde theater in New York for the second half of the 20th century. "Behind the Lid" is an evocation not only of Ms. Nagrin but also of an entire theatrical subculture that now has only a flickering existence." Ben Brantley, The New York Times

A new work created by playwright/performer Lee Nagrin and puppeteer/performer Basil Twist.

Exploring the unique realm of dreams, "Behind The Lid" breaks away from traditional staging techniques; spaces expand, open, reveal, while an intimate audience of 18 people will itself travel through this hand made world.

"Behind the Lid" is the story of an older woman in her 70's who is looking back on her life through a dream; within the dream of the performance, the real memories and real dreams of this woman are revealed through the confluence of text, puppetry, music and light. As the audience takes a journey through this woman's life, they will form their own dream, as they experience layer upon layer of her memories, of her life. The woman's life and dreams, as the play reveals, is Lee Nagrin's, the prime creator of the text. Twist creates the puppetry, and performs alongside Nagrin.

Performance dates at The Silver Whale Gallery, May 29-June 24, 2007. see www.leenagrin.com

Symphonie Fantastique

Buenos Aires, South America
Paseo la Plaza
August 21- September 2

A one-of-a-kind experience, combining the magic of puppetry with the powerful suggestions of music, dance and abstract art. Symphonie Fantastque is an intimate show set to the five movements of Hector Berlioz's 19th century classical composition of the same name. The hour-long Symphonie is performed entirely in a specially constructed water tank. Unseen, puppeteers manipulate feathers, glitter, plastics, vinyl, mirrors, slides, dyes, blacklight, overhead projections, air bubbles, latex fishing lures to deliver a concert of forms, shapes and moving colors.

34th Annual Village Halloween Parade

Jefferson Market Library Spider
Wednesday October 31, starting at 7pm

Twist carries on a thirty-year tradition of puppetry manipulated from homes and buildings along the Parade route. For the 11th year, he manipulates his striking giant spider during the Parade from the dramatic Italianate Gothic Clock tower of the Jefferson Market Library. Each year as the winds of October howl, Twist walks the beloved arachnid, spanning ten feet, through the streets of the west village, up the 149 stairs of this New York landmark to it's perch in the tower. This puppet is a visual treat for those participating in the Parade as well as those lined near the Library who can witness it's annual appearance.

DOGUGAESHI

Twist unfolds an intimate, abstract, contemporary journey of images and emotions influenced by the rarefied tradition of Japanese dogugaeshi stage mechanism technique and his own encounters with the remaining rural caretakers of this once popular art form. This tour of Japan to Kanazawa, Yokohama, Kyoto, Tokushima and Osaka represents a culmination of Twist's quest to share his completed Dogugaeshi with the people of Japan, especially in Shikoku where he was most inspired by antique decaying screens and the tales of men and women who remembered the dogugaeshi (or fusuama karakuri) from their youth. Venues include the Kanazawa Museum of 21st Century Art.
